Ever felt like crying after camel pose? You’re not alone…
It’s been known for a long time that emotional releases can be experienced during yoga, massage sessions and other physical activity. As awareness of the brain/ body connection grows, there is now growing research into how these experiences come about.
We are all quite comfortable with the idea that thinking takes place in the brain and memories are stored there. We often imagine the brain as a kind of giant library full of books containing tales of our life’s adventures. Why couldn’t traces of memories be stored outside of the grey and white spongy matter where we feel they belong? Do we have our issues stored in our muscles and in the connective tissue that holds everything together,r known as facia.
There is evidence to suggest that there could be a relationship between emotional trauma, supressed memories and patterns of tension in the physical body. Unprocessed portions of experiences and the process of suppression them, could create tension in the muscles and connective tissue of the body. This physical response would then subconsciously be linked to the initial experience and emotions by neural pathways. Therefore releases in the muscles and facia, could create releases in brain areas that hold the emotional memories.
There’s another idea that crops up quite a lot. Are you ready for this? So…… memories are stored in an electronic high speed communication matrix that extends into every cell of the body. Sounds all very sci-fi doesn’t it. So anyway, this matrix stores both conscious and subconscious memories and absorbs the physical and emotional impact of traumatic experience.
What the hell does that mean? Let’s just say that the storage of memories is a lot more complicated that the library analogy. Your memory is more like the Internet, we know the information is stored but, it is a manner much more complicated than we can really comprehend.
Your body and mind are not separate. They are part of one whole being. One cannot exist without the other and healing or damage in one area will inevitably impact the other. The depth of this subject definitely requires many more blogs and much more brain ache to understand. It’s complicated but fascinating, so keep your eyes and mind open.
